Positioning Your Research for a Changing Funding Landscape
The external funding landscape has shifted significantly over the past year. Federal agencies are tightening budgets, sharpening priorities, and, in many cases, signaling clear preferences for research that aligns with specific national and strategic goals. Proposals that once competed primarily on scientific merit alone now increasingly compete on strategic fit as well: does this research address a priority the sponsor has explicitly identified as important right now?
This does not mean faculty should chase trends at the expense of their own research agenda. It means that framing matters more than ever, and that faculty who understand how their work connects to sponsor priorities, agency strategic plans, and emerging national initiatives are better positioned to compete successfully, even when the underlying science has not changed.
Why Strategic Alignment Matters
- Sponsors fund what they’ve prioritized. Agency strategic plans, funding opportunity announcements, and program officer priorities all signal where resources are headed. Understanding this landscape before submitting, not after a decline, saves time and improves competitiveness.
- Interdisciplinary framing is increasingly rewarded. Many of the largest and most strategically significant funding opportunities favor teams that bring multiple disciplinary perspectives to a shared problem.
- Timing and positioning compound. Faculty who engage early with program officers, attend relevant briefings, and understand a sponsor’s near-term priorities are consistently better positioned than those who submit cold.
How the Office of Strategic Initiatives and Research Development (OSIRD) Can Help
- Matching faculty to funding opportunities. OSIRD tracks funding trends and sponsor priorities across federal, state, and foundation sources, and can help identify opportunities that align with your specific research program, not just your general discipline.
- Workshops on sponsor priorities. Sessions designed to help faculty understand what specific sponsors are prioritizing right now, and how to position a competitive proposal accordingly.
- Strategic proposal consultation. Faculty considering a major submission are encouraged to reach out early. A brief conversation before drafting often saves significant revision time later.
