External Professional Activities: Notice of Intent Process Streamlined
The External Professional Activities Notice of Intent (NOI) process has moved out of Cayuse. Faculty and staff now complete and submit the NOI form directly through a new online link, with automated routing built in for required approvals. The change reduces administrative follow-up and creates a simpler, more user-friendly submission experience.

NEW RESOURCE

New IRB Study Volunteer Database
A new IRB Study Volunteer Database is now available to help investigators connect with potential study participants. Researchers can use the database to promote approved IRB studies to community members interested in participating in research, supporting recruitment efforts across campus.

Field Research Manual Now Available

A comprehensive Field Research Manual is now available to support safe, compliant off-campus research. Faculty, staff, and students conducting field research are responsible for:

  • Developing and completing a Field Research Plan before initiating activities
  • Submitting a proposal in Cayuse SP, including all applicable compliance questions and supporting documentation (Scope of Work and Field Research Plan)
  • Evaluating risks associated with off-site travel and field participation
  • Completing and documenting required training before activities begin
  • Reviewing emergency procedures in the approved Field Research Plan
  • Reporting injuries, incidents, or accidents to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) promptly
  • Reporting unsafe conditions or equipment issues to the PI or appropriate supervisor
  • Obtaining approval from all applicable oversight committees (IRB, IACUC, IBC, or others) before beginning research
  • Using appropriate PPE and safety equipment per risk assessments and approved protocols
  • Complying with international travel, export control, and research security requirements for research conducted abroad

Research Security Updates

The federal research security landscape continues to evolve. Researchers should stay current on the following requirements:

  • Foreign Travel and Export Controls: All international travel conducted on behalf of the university must be reviewed by both the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) and ORCI. Travelers using Emburse (formerly Chrome River) for pre-approval will complete this review as part of that process.
  • Visitor Screening: All international visitors and collaborators must be reported to ORCI for screening against restricted party and sanctioned entity lists.
  • International Research and Sponsored Program Collaborations: Proposed collaborations involving foreign institutions or partners must be submitted through Cayuse SP for review by OSP and relevant departmental stakeholders. Early review helps identify compliance, disclosure, export control, and research security considerations before they become obstacles.

Research Security Training: Required for individuals on federally funded projects when mandated by sponsor requirements. As agencies continue implementing NSPM-33, investigators and key personnel should complete required training and maintain documentation for proposal submission and award management.
