CITI Training Instructions

CITI is a web-based research education program. CITI training is approved by the ORI as a training option when submitting an application to the IRB, IACUC or IBC committee. To enroll in the training, please click the link below and follow the instructions under the course title that is applicable to your research submission.

  1. Visit the CITI Program login
  2. Because UNCG utilizes Single-Sign-On, you will select “log-in through my organization.” You will type in University of North Carolina at Greensboro and select “continue to SSO Login / Instructions.”
    • Log-in through organization page on CITI
  3. You will then choose whether to register a new account or log-in. If you already have a CITI account, you will select that option. If you do not have an account, you will select that option.
    • When you select that you already have an account, it will bring up a menu for you to fill with the username and password you created. Once you fill it out, it will affiliate your account with UNCG.
      • NOTE: If you are not affiliated with UNCG, please input 9 zeros when asked for your UNCG ID during the CITI registration process.
      • To transfer course credit between institutions, you will need to be affiliated with both institutions (your previous institution and your new institution). Follow the “Click here to affiliate with another institution” link on your Main Menu to add an affiliation.
      • When you are affiliated with both institutions, enroll in the courses that need to be transferred under both institutions, via the “View courses” link under the appropriate institution if necessary. You will need to enroll in the same stage of the course (Basic / Refresher) for a proper transfer to occur.
      • Once you are enrolled in the courses, any modules that are shared between the courses between institutions will have their credit transferred automatically. The transfer is based on each module’s unique ID number. If the courses do not match exactly, not all credit will transfer and you may need complete the difference in modules at your new institution to get full credit for a Completion Report.
      • Each institution determines the time frame in which modules are transferable. This time frame can span any time between 1 and 10 years. Some institutions opt out of this option and do not allow modules to transfer.

    • When you select that you do not have an account, it will bring up a blue button that says “Create a new CITI program account.” It will then bring up a new page that allows you to select security questions and a secondary email address.

Human Subjects Protection Training for Community Partners

Community partners are non-academic personnel (e.g. business associates, local government representatives, school system representatives) who may or may not be engaged in research requiring IRB approval. To determine if a researcher you are collaborating with qualifies as a community researcher please complete the Community Researcher Eligibility Form and email to ORI@uncg.edu.

CIRTification: Community Involvement in Research Training is a human research protection training program designed especially for community partners. If your research involves community members recruiting research participants, obtaining informed consent, or collecting data, this training is appropriate for your study team members who are considered as community researchers.

CIRTification is an online-based training that introduces learners to the basics of the research – the terminology, people, and methods. It also reviews the history of research abuses that has informed current ethical principles, rules, and regulations.

CPRET (Community Partner Research Ethics Training) is a community-based research ethics training offered as an alternative to the CITI program for eligible community co-researchers when it has been determined that both CITI and CIRTification training are not appropriate. This could be for a variety of reasons, such as limited access to online training, intercultural differences in ethics, and language and literacy differences. Please see the scholarly resources page from UNCG’s Institute for Community and Economic Engagement for more information on CPRET and to identify which community co-researcher training is appropriate for your community partners.

  1. Go to https://training.ccts.uic.edu/
  2. Click “register (top right hand corner). Select “I am not from UIC.”
  3. Complete the registration form. When asked to select a site, select “University of North Carolina, Greensboro”.
  4. Click “Register” to finish.
  5. Visit the Course Catalog. Information about CIRTification will appear. Click   “Learn More” and “Enroll” to enroll in CIRTification.
  6. Email the certificate of completion to the UNCG PI you are working with. They will be required to submit this training certificate with their IRB application.

CIRTification Online is also available in Spanish. Simply access the training portal, enroll in CIRTification or login, and select the option to launch the course in Spanish (empezar in Español).

Yes, the community partner training will replace CITI human subjects training for anyone who is a community partner and was approved to complete this training by the IRB via the Community Researcher Eligibility Form. These trainings do not replace CITI human subjects research training required for University of North Carolina personnel engaged in research requiring IRB approval.

The Principal Investigator (PI) listed in the IRB application is responsible to ensure that their community partners receive this training. IRB applications will not be approved by the IRB if the application lists community partners that have not taken this training. The PI or the staff member assisting the PI with their IRB application can forward this webpage to their community partners and direct them to the heading below: CIRTification: Community Involvement in Research Training.
